Large Suction Strainer,
March 19, 2009

"This is the strainer I used for my homemade oil tank, the best setup for a 16gpm pump.I have checked my oil and no contamination, also I used item#4020,a 20gpm capacity return filter which both work together to keep contaminates from from entering pump and cylinder which will shorten life of all hydraulic components if you don't use them. A great insurance policy for your expensive hydraulic components, get both of them."

Hydraulic Pump Insurance,
January 14, 2008
By DieselDoctor50

"I recently had a hydraulic pump failure on my log splitter due to contamination of the hydraulic oil. After disassembly of the system I found the manufacturer had not installed a strainer in the reservoir and dirt was able to be drawn directly into the pump. I purchased a suction strainer from Northern Tool and modified the tank by welding a pipe flange to accept the threads on the strainer. The new pump will be protected from contaminants and the high quality strainer can be serviced when necessary. I also installed a hydraulic filter on the return circuit to remove fine dirt particles and maximize the life of the pump. Northern Tool has great products at reasonable prices."
