Hose stiffens up, otherwise excellent, August 22, 2007
By ctreview from Norwalk, CT

"My fiancee and I are commuting a total of almost 300 miles a day in different directions. I commute to a state where gas is 20-40 cents cheaper per gallon than where she works and it's 40-60 cents cheaper than where we live. Although we planned on moving as quickly as possible, this time dragged on and on (we are moving this weekend though).

I bought this to refuel her car (she drives about 170 miles a day, i.e. a full tank every second day). We saved a minimum of $2-3 per tank for the 2-3 months or so we've used it. I also filled the 40 gal tank on the van we have. Based on this the caddy has already paid for itself. And I can use this for the lawn equipment etc we have. I already had two 5 gal gas containers and one 2.5 gal container as well.

Although the tank is heavy when full (perhaps 80-90 lbs of gasoline, about 10-15 pound container with hose), I am able to comfortably carry it on my own (and I'm no muscleman). I hold it flat/horizontal, not vertically by the handle. This is to get it up above the level of the gas cap of the car.

I had no problems with the siphon pump, loose or leaking fittings, or anything else. It doesn't pump that quickly but it's okay as you don't have to actually stand there and pump it.

I'd do the following:
1. Put gas caddy on top of a (flat top) garbage can or on a retaining wall around our driveway.
2. Put the caddy vertical. Unscrew the vent on the caddy filler cap. Pump the handle perhaps 5-10 times to get gas flowing. Verify flow by listening for the vent bit to make air noises.
3. Wedge the car's gas tank cap in the pump handle (like you would at a gas station). This allows it to siphon/pump on its own.
4. Do other things in the vicinity (check the car's oil, air pressure, clean the windows, whatever).
5. The gas really does stop flowing when the tank is full. I watched this happen a number of times and now trust that it happens on its own.
6. The nozzle end is ridged so it pops into the filler tube - don't have to worry about it dropping out.
7. I disconnect the hose every time as it stiffens up and looks like it's prone to crack. I hold the disconnected end up above my head and pump the remaining fuel into the tank before I go anywhere, reduces how much spills.
8. The hose also discolored (it's grey now, used to be black). It has some creases. I have a feeling it will have to be replaced at some point.
9. I refill it with the 5 gallon containers if necessary and repeat 1-4.
The shutoff valve works as it should. The vent/filler cap does not leak, unlike some of the other gas containers I have.

It holds about 14.5 gallons, maybe 15, without leaking or anything.

The wheels stopped turning easily - I think I just have to adjust it but I simply haven't done it.

Overall I like it. I'd be curious about a more durable hose and more durable pump handle (metal one) but this is fine.

BTW I don't know how to rate myself. I change all the cars oil, I do the brakes, done axles, but haven't done a timing belt or a clutch. To some I'm a "pro". To the pros I'm a beginner."

Flo N Go Pump not durable, April 15, 2008
By Useddude from Kansas City, MO

"The fuel caddy itself works well. It is easier than pouring smaller containers with hoses that leak. However, the caddy hose stiffens after a while. The Flo N Go pump works, but is light-weight and prone to breakage."

cheap hose, April 14, 2008
By cajunroy from Sunset, La

"I think others have reviewed saying the same about the hose. Not just the hose but the mount it supposed to store on, is even more flimzy. If I were to guess, I could not completely empty it with the hose, it left over a half a gallon, so had to manually empty it. Using it by gravity drain is slow, but once I get it started I just go find something else to to while waiting. The container as a whole, is good, just all the attachements are cheaply made. Also my hose kinks right out of the connection point to the tank. One recommendation is to put reinvorcement of some type at the exit of the tank, to keep hose from kinking, and eventually breaking."

14 gallon fuel caddy, January 21, 2008
By firewalker from Sugar Land, Texas

"For the price this unit beats having to carry around a lot of smaller fuel cans, especially when working in a remote area. It can be laid flat and rolled out of the way even under a trailer or parked vehicle. It can be used for a main fuel source when you have a need for preparing small amouts of 2 cycle fuels say for chain saws, garden equipment and the like where you might have different oil/gas mix formulations. The pumping action is simple and effective, however; the lever lock mechanism can be a challenge when you get into a rhythm, it can engage and lock the pump lever."

Gas-R-Up, January 21, 2008
By TheOz from Pennsylvania

"What a time saver !
I use to go to the gas station every 2 weeks to get gas for my mower and lawn equipment. Now it's once a month. It's not that heavy when filled and it's easy to move around with the wheels. If you put it up on a cinder block gravity takes over and you don't have to pump.
Best purchase I've made so far.
Northern Tool is #1"

Duramax 14 Gallon Fuel Caddy, January 14, 2008
By referman1 from Milwaukie, OR

"This fuel can has great potential of being a great product, but falls a little short. The wheels don't roll worth a darn and hand pumping gets very tiresome. It is extremely heavy when full of fuel so lifting in and out of truck is difficult when needing to refill the tank. On the other side, Yes it is heavy but most of the time you wheel or drag the tank around to fuel up your other equipment. It is very easy to control the amount of fuel into even the smallest tanks and you don't have to lift a heavy can and try and balance without spilling while looking to see how much to put in. This product has some complaints but all in all I would rather use ithis product than not. It is a back saver and that is why I use it."

Fuel Caddy, October 29, 2007
By Orf74 from North Branford, CT

"The idea of being able to store and hold 14 gallons of fuel on site was enticing. The unit lacks a quality fuel hose and the handle/nozzle can be very tiring if you have to pump out a large quantity of fuel, very hand cramping. If ou plan on purchasing this item you need to fabricate a shelf to install it above (higher) the equipment your going to fuel. You need to mount the fuel caddy high so you can take advantage of the unit functioning on gravity feed, other than that it's to cumbersome to use the pump handle. The hose needs to be much improved, it constantly kinks restricting the fuel supply from coming through."

Great Value, October 29, 2007
By AlwaysMowing from Texas

"This tank is really handy. I have used one for a whole mowing season on my 2 acre place that is 20 minutes from the nearest fuel station. I have either had it elevated above my riding mower or simply pumped the gas with the pump nozzle. I plan to use it at the dock with my boat as it will work perfectly for that purpose as well."

I Like the duramax Fuel Caddy..., October 16, 2007
By magic from Pacific Northwest

"I bought it to fuel my tractor and it performs that function beautifully. It's easy to transport flat in a pickup bed, easy to refuel without removing from the truck.
The tank and fixtures are very much up to the task - thick material is used so there's no worry about the weight of a full tank splitting it open.
My one complaint is about the hose used for the filler assembly - it kinks easily and so it flattens at bends which then restrict the flow of fuel through and probably unnecessarily increases the effort needed to squeeze the pump.
As for the pump - I was pleasantly surprised to find that it is not overly difficult to operate and that it delivers a pretty high rate of transfer. I had been prepared to replace the pump system with an already owned electric fuel pump but now have decided to wait on that until the hand squeezer fails, if it does.
Overall, a good usable answer for my tractor fueling need."

DURAMAX 14 GALLON FUEL CADDY, October 9, 2007
By BUDDY1 from MISSISSIPPI

"THIS IS A VERY POOR QUALITY ITEM. THE GAS LEAKS THROUGH THE HOSE.
IT IS HARD TO ROLL AND NOT STURDY ENOUGH TO LIFT WITH A HOIST. I NOW WISH THAT I WOULD HAVE SPENT THE $300.00 FOR A BETTER ONE."

Duramax 14 Gal Fuel Caddy, October 8, 2007
By yoopermr2 from Upper Pennusula of Michigan

"The larger capacity of this fuel caddy is perfect for filling my boat and garden tractors, although it is difficult to lower out of my truck due to the weight when full. The pump handle works good and it rolls well for short distances. For rolling longer distances a longer handel would improve handling.

All in all I like the Duramax 14 gal fuel caddy."

Gas Caddy review, October 8, 2007
By Goodwood from Upstate New York

"The Duramax 14 gallon fuel Caddy works well within its design parameters. I have only two suggestions to improve its functionality--increase the capacity and improve the hose material. The dual valves on the output are a nice touch and were needed when the hose came off the barbed fitting on the nozzle due to plastic creep or flow and the ring of hard plastic was not enough to retain it.

I would recommend this unit to anyone needing a portable, moderate-sized fuel container."
