Food plots,
January 21, 2008
By hunter308from Atlanta Georgia
"I purchased this swisher mower about a year ago and I have used it for my yard and for preparing food plots on my hunting property. It is great. I can cut about 3 acres an hour or more. I am very impressed with the ease that it will go though high grass and weeds. I have cut areas that have never been accessed before with no problem at all. I have cut some areas that were 3 foot high. You will have to go over it twice at that height though. But you cannot do that with any other mower."

"The reviews section helped me select this model, and I would say they are very accurate. I give it a 5 star because of the price, would back off to a 4 if it was not such a good value...mainly due to perceived durability issues. Strengths are easy starting, easy towing, and a design that really cuts, even in the tall stuff. I have used my unit twice now (I'd guess about 6-7 hours total), and am cutting 24 inch grass and weeds mainly, though it also cuts the occasional half inch sapling without problem. Sometimes you have to slow a little to let the engine catch up, but the rear discharge makes things possible a side discharge would not. I thought the fuel use was reasonable, so did not find it as thirsty as some others commented. It ran easily 45 minutes on a tank.
For weaknesses, there are a few so far....As others noted, the metal brackets that create the off-set capability are a little too light duty, and I already note that the holes are "expanding" from the connector pins. Also, things do rattle loose on the unit, and you need to check all nuts/bolts regularly. My first use I broke the belt because a guide bolt rattled off. Ease your new belt in too, I burned mine first use. The aftermarket belt I bought as a replacement seemed much more durable, and my second use was completely without issue. The access to the belts is good, though you need to keep a socket with you as it requires removing 4 bolts.
I pulled mine with a UTV, no problems, and a lawn tractor also with no issue. A little hard to hear both mowers by the way, so I would not cut real tall stuff with two mowers going at once. You can't back the unit up, but turning is crisp if you have a short radius on your pull vehicle.
One thing to note, the unit is wider than you'd expect with the large outside mounted wheels. I have a 5 ft trailer, that narrows a few inches on each side due to a drop ramp. It does not roll between the sides.
All in all glad I have it, and would recommend it."

Swisher Sweet,

"This mower is awesome! I use it on 115 acres most of which is trails for my ATV. Also works well on lawn.Cuts better than John Deere lawn tractor. Leaves yard looking professionally manicured. Much faster cutting trails than my Ford or International tractors and easier to maneuver. Only drawback I can find is the size of fuel tank. Wish it was larger and will probably change it using good all redneck ingenuity eventually. All in all very good product for the price. Would recommend to anyone with large yard or hunting property."

"I probably should have bought a more heavy duty model, This mower seems to use cheap parts, It has eaten 5 belts so far and small parts have vibrated loose, They call it a trail mower, Unless you have a level , graded trail with no Gopher mounds or sticks steer clear of this mower, Not Happy"

44" swisher trail mower,

"I bought this mower for use on property we own in NH. The property is 50 acres of which about 2 acres are grass. There are trails all through the rest where we ride ATVs. The mower works well and cut our mowing time way down. The only problem I have is trying to back it up. I pull it with an ATV and the hitch is too close to the rear axle. I plan on extending the hitch on the ATV by about 1 foot. I think this will make it easier to control the mower when backing up because the pivot point will be farther away from the axle of the ATV. The mower starts easily and runs well but it vibrates alittle more that I thought it would. In terms of fuel consumption it uses more than the lawn tractor we have but the time savings is well worth the extra fuel. I also had to rework the height adjustment of the hitch to match that of the ATV. All in all I am still satisfied with it..."

Swisher Trailmower,

"I have owned my mower for three years now and will recommend to any one. I am mowing about an acre and a half of hill side (up to 30° slope) at our hunting cabin with an ATV where a lawn mower would take 2 - 3 hours twice a month and very dangerous, now taking 1-2 hours once a month. I would have purchase the larger unit but opted for the smaller lighter unit for use on step terrain. Also will recommend using a 4-wheel drive ATV when on step terrain. I had to change the tongue to one solid piece with a ball hitch to allow for the uneven terrain and to prevent wear and tear on both pieces of equipment. Also I would advise any new purchaser to tighten all bolts within the deck to prevent lost time when you may not be where you will have the correct tools available for minor repairs. The only dislike would be the lack of height adjustment in this unit, which can be fixed by installing larger tires, overall a great investment!!"

Great time saver,

"By more than doubling my cutting swath, this trailmower cuts my mowing time by 40%. It does have limitations in that you can't effectively back up and do a three point turn, but the increased cutting path is worth the trade-off. The more things you have to cut around, though, the more you lose the benefit of the added width. The only other comment is that since it is much lighter than my riding mower, it bounces quite a bit more and leaves a much less even height on my less than smooth lawn. I can go slower to mitigate that, but then it takes longer. Overall, I'm very happy with it."
