Swisher Trimmer mower 6.5 w/adjustable head,
November 18, 2008
By justanotherChristian from Tennessee
"I bought my Swisher from Northern Tool about 6 years ago. On flat land,
because of the adjustable head, it is marvel for clearing light brush
AND MOWING UNDER FENCES and up against the base of trees.. It is also great for all types of edging! I have loved it and used it A LOT - but I have 2 complaints. (1) that there is no easy way to change the oil on my model (2) the wheels tend to flex badly when I force my Swisher onto the side of slopes. The wheels need to be stiffer. After so much use in so many circumstances, I found myself wishing for self-propelled to help me on hills, ditches and slopes.
STILL (because of the adjustable string-head) there is nothing out
there equal to it, and I can still recommend it. If mine finally
utterly failed, I would be hard pressed to replace it FUNCTIONALLY with
anything else that is available. The DR does not have the adjustable
head, and THAT makes ALL THE DIFFERENCE when you are cutting many types of brush and weeds and grass in many different landscapes. I have my
gripes - but still recommend it."

Edger/Trimmer,
April 21, 2008
By MomLu from Riverside, CA
"I purchased a Swisher edger trimmer a few years ago from Northern Tool.
It is the ideal tool to trim around our 165' X 365' (over an acre ) property.
Since I have a riding mower, I was able to use my Swisher trimmer for all the areas where I had formerly used a power push mower.
It got into areas not accessable to the regular mower.
Unfortunately, someone else liked it too and I relinquished it to my daughter who now does most of the heavy mowing and trimming.
I would recommend a Swisher trimmer to anyone, whatever the size of their mowing area."

bad buy,
January 21, 2008
"I bought this trimmer hoping not to carry a hand held one. This machine
works find on smooth ground. If your wheels go in a small hole you have
a bad gap in your yard. The machine needs a neutral position so it can
be cranked without the trimmer engaged. Hard to pull. I made a bad buy.
Thanks jwh"

"Negative:
The trimmer is always in gear which means you have to overcome the inertia of the pulleys and string head when starting the engine. My older machine (not Swisher) had a lever which would allow the engine to be started in neutral and than the head could be engaged by the lever. This was an attractive feature becasue it would allow you to disengage the head without stopping the engine.
Positive:
The offset of the trimmer head initially was seen as an oddball feature but proved to be the machine's most significant asset. With this offset it is easy to trim under the fence line in short order. Replacing of the trim line was the only thing preventing continuous mowing. You can extend the life of the line by not letting it hit the fence up rights.
Jury is still out on the 90 degree head rotation for edging. Experience so far is that the line has to be replaced to frequently.
Conclusion:
For my application for trimming under lengthy fence line, the product is a dream but would be better if the head could be disengaged without stopping the engine.

"I purchased this item several months ago. We live on a farm and have a lot of yard work to keep everything under control. I like the fact that I can not only weedeat everything, but I can also edge around my sidewalks. I t definitly has made my job easier, especially since I have a bad back. My edger trimmer is so easy now I can do some of the yard work and not leave it all to my husband"
