"I’m a professional stairbuilder and utilize a lot of steel components in the structural design of my staircases. I needed a Mig welder that was light enough to move around on the jobsite yet had enough power and capacity to weld heavy steel all day long. The Hobart Handler 187 MIG Welder 230 volt handled the task required beautifully. The photos show how well it performs in all position continuous welding. I would recommend it to anyone who needs a compact machine to do serious welding."

Great welder,
March 7, 2007
"This is a great little machine within it's capacity. It has excellent control at the lower settings yet is still able to weld heavier metal at the top end without breaking a sweat. Several other machines I have used in this class (price range) either work well on the top settings or on the bottom settings (the Hobart 180 suffered from this), but it is rare to find one that works well throughout the whole range. The Hobart 187 does just that though, and at a great price.
So far I have used it with .35 flux core and .35 solid core with 75/25 gas and it works better than I expected when I bought it with either. I would have no hesitations buying another if for some reason I needed to.
I can't think of anything negative to say about this machine, as long as what you need to do falls within it's abilities, you will not be dissappointed.
Mike"

Hobart 170,

"I bought this welder about a year ago and love it. I'm converting a drag-race car to a pro-street car and tried to "get away" with a stick welder and 110v mig. Only regret is I whish I'd bought this machine sooner. It was extremely easy to set up and start using - took only a few minutes. It has welded thin sheetmetal and some pretty thick-walled tubing without a single problem. Well worth every single dollar!"

best bang for the buck!,
October 20, 2009
"I purchased this unit I replaced a 110 volt craftsman unit that was very well used and getting tired. At first I was going to purchase the Handeler 210. In the end decided that I didnt need the optional quick change spoolgun so I opted for the Handeler 187. this is a great welder and very portable. The welds look great with 75/25 gas :-)"

"I am a welded steel sculptor and have used a Hobart 180/187 for several years. It easily handles steel up to 5/16"T. An excellent value. Never failed me. I have used it with shielding gas and without. Easy to change spool; easy to change amps/feed rate.
The only problems I have had is that (1) the switch on the gun failed after 2 years; needed to replace it. Simple to replace. (2) Also after much heavy use the switch wires where they enter the welder body have separated within gun cable (inside). Needed to resolder these 2X. Easy, quick fix. Very good value for usage."

"Great product, excellent quality, and a good price! I highly recommend this product to anyone i talk to about welders! I have used a miller 175 for years and have found the hobart 187 to be equal in all ways."

Excellent welder solid product,

"I bought this welder a couple years back to modify the frame on my project truck. I had used lincolns comparable MIG unit as well as one of their smaller flux core models on steel, and a much larger Miller 350 on aluminum while I was learning. The hobart machines are very much comparable to miller other than the price (why I bought my hobart over a miller 180). It uses a miller gun so parts are easy to come by, though I have yet to need them. I cant say how well it welds with flux core but for GMAW its great. I've welded up to 1/4 inch with .030 wire and the welds are solid, I'd imagine they'd bite even more with .035. All in all I have probably 75-80 hours on this machine with no complaints yet. I definately reccomend buying this welder if youre looking to do automotive welding. Exhaust to chassis it'll weld it."

Great product,
March 25, 2009
"This is one of the best wire welders you can buy for any amount. I farm about 1400 acres of corn/wheat/soybeans and hay in southern kentucky. I use this machine to repair everything from sheet metal on equipment to heavy steel repair and fabrication.
I also work maintenance at the county detention center. We used this welder to weld steel beds together to make bunk beds. Using this machine 8 hours a day, it never gave me any problems.
Also, Northern Tool was fantastic helping me with the purchase and recomending all of the needed extras."

"Been very happy with the unit I replaced a 110 volt unit that wasn't up to what I needed it to do.
Bigger is always better but this is a good compromise between size/cost and function.
