Best Tap and Die Set I've ever been around,
August 20, 2007
By farmerwannabee

"This Tap and Die Set is the end result of many previous disappointments with innexpensive taps and dies. Inferior taps and dies simply aren't worth the money if you have anything more serious in mind than restoring damaged threads.
This set is absolutely superior in three ways that are not apparent by the descriptive wording in the Northern Catalog.
1: The choice of materials and heat treating hardness is just right. Harder, and the taps would be too easily broken. Softer, and the taps and dies wouldn't stay sharp enough to thread difficult materials.
2: The range of sizes is enough to handle almost any ordinary threading requirement and many not so common ones. Most sets only go up to half inch size or thirteen millimeter. These go up to three quarter inch and nineteen millimeter. I've occasionally needed larger sizes, but I prefer to buy them individually, as needed, because they are rarely used. Most sets only include the standard national fine and national coarse, but this set includes the extremely hard to find super fine threads often used on machinery.
3: All sizes of taps are present in both styles. There are two of each size tap. One standard tap for through hole tapping and one bottoming tap for blind hole tapping. In previous sets, I've not found the bottoming taps. I'd have to grind the lead off of a standard tap in order to create a bottoming tap. Then I'd be left with a difficult to start and difficult to turn tap anytime I'd need that size in the future.
I simply couldn't be more pleased with this Tap and Die Set."

Good value despite a few glitches,
December 8, 2008
"This set has a lot for the money - including some less common sizes/pitches. My only real complaint is that the second tap I used (a large metric) had a flaw - almost like a piece of slag left after the grinding process. I used a small grinding bit on a Dremel and a file to clean it up, and it worked OK. The others have been fine so far, though I haven't used most of them. Another small detail is that the so-called bottoming taps aren't. They could be ground down to eliminate the few threads worth of taper, it's not too often I need a true bottoming tap."

great general purpose kit,

"I used this kit multiple times since buying it. I purchased it for use at my home. My employer provides the set I use at work. This set has proven very affective and usefull when rebuilding my VW VR6 engine. This set has both blind and through taps in most common sizes which is great when cleaning threads on an engine block. Used to make theads to plug oil galleys in said engine also. Used all over a nold boat trailer during a refurbishing project .Taps and dies cut right in with a little tapping fluid (a must if you want them to last). I would recommend to anyone looking for a good general tap and die set. Not the best but more than satisfactory for your average user."

Outstanding tap and die set,
April 14, 2008
"This is the best, most complete tap and die set I have ever seen for the money. The steel they are made of seems to be just the right hardness. I really like the added bottom taps. I have done some really heavy duty tapping with these taps, and they are all holding up real well."
