Shocks me how good this works!, June 18, 2007
By DWheat9003 from MI

"I saw this splitter advertised in an e-mail that Northern Tool sent to me one day, and I was a little hesitant for two reasons. 1. I didn't know if I wanted to spend the money right now. 2. I'm hard to please sometimes and I wasn't a 100% sure if it would be up to the task. Now after having wanted and needed a means of splitting wood easily, for wood collected from my one acre parcel, and because I have a fairly nice wood insert with built in blower that tends to eat wood like a hungry lion, I figured why not? And I certainly do not wish to wear myself out splitting wood the old fashioned way, call me spoiled, call me lazy, but my lower back tells me it's too much. And I was not in the market for a high priced and noisy gas model. After reading the straight forward and honest experiences people are having with this 2 HP electric I decided to buy it. Now today on June 8th I found my wonderful package at the back door, I unpacked it, and opened the bleeder on the machine as someone on here was kind enough to make sure prospective owners do, and Walla. THIS MACHINE IS AWSOME!

All I can say it is quiet and powerful, and most importantly compact which is the in thing today. I might add it looks very well constructed and busts wood wide open in an instant. I really hate companies that don't sell nice products like as if they don't know what they are buying from suppliers, but Northern does know and it shows with quality products!

Thanks Northern this is a dandy!"

The Wood Splitter That Could, March 6, 2007
By derf123 from LIncoln, Nebraska

"Regarding 5 Ton, Electric Wood Splitter:
By trade, I'm an engineer in the aerospace industry and I’m very critical of any type of tooling and/or promises made regarding performance.
I thought the 5-ton capacity wouldn’t allow me to split some species of wood, or stall when splitting pieces with large knots or Y-joint.
Oak, Ash, Mulberry, and Hackberry are the primary types of wood that I cut for burning, and, I’m amazed, it has split everything that I’ve put into the guide tray.
The operation is quiet and it’s very easy to move and store when not in use.
I've split nearly 2 cords with this unit, this season, and it shows no noticeable wear.
It is also perfect for splitting larger pieces of wood into kindling.
I’m very, very impressed with this wood splitter.
This is one of the best purchases that I’ve ever made from Northern Tool."

Electric Log Splitter, June 9, 2008
By Skypilot from Farmerville, LA

"Although the shipping box looked like it had been through the war, the splitter didn't have a scratch on it and within 10 minutes, I had split my first log. I am very pleased with this unit. Have about 3 hours of splitting now with no complaints."

electric log splitter, April 29, 2008
By brokenaxe1 from Ellwood City, PA

"Good buy for the money, especially when on sale. Splits well, though suggested electric cord needs to be very heavy duty and 30' or less. I found a 12 ga./25' cord that I use, but it is somewhat limiting as to where I use the splitter. Wheel base is somewhat tippy when transporting, as the splitter is side-to-side heavy in the upright travel position. Had a bit of a rough time splitting stringy wood such as some elm, but straight grained wood splits like a charm. I split larger logs than the stated size...Kind of whittled away at the larger ones. Packaging for shipping could be a bit more substantial. I would recommend it for the general homeower who needs a reliable and inexpensive tool to get the job done."

value, April 21, 2008
By 1heatseeker from oregon

"i was skeptical of a 110v., 20 a. motored unit doing the work. given that i asked around and found one fellow that had a similar chinese unit and was tickled with it.
now i tell anyone who mentions hating swinging a maul and is considering a spendy gas engine rig to come on by and try my efficient little unit.
after reading many of the reviews, i too could point to it's short falls but have gone to some trouble to modify mine in order to have the motor's peckerhead shielded from hits--( a section of 4" aluminum angle) and removing the pair of huge torsion springs that return the handles to battery.
also ganged the handles into one.
the ergonomic problems are not a consideration for me as my woodstove is in my work shop and i have a beater office chair beside the splitter and in front of the stove. i wheel barrow in rounds and sit to split!
definitely worth the money! one has to monkey around with knotty or seasoned big dia. rounds but split they do."

5 Ton Wood Splitter, April 16, 2008
By E71VAnow from Locust Grove, VA

"I received the wood splitter with very little damage to the shipping container and no damage to the device. All of the parts were in excellent condition and the splitter worked the first time I plugged it in and turned it on. I have spent about 10 hours splitting wood and had no problems at all.

One word of caution: when using the splitter be sure it is on a level surface or that the motor end is lower. This keeps the hydrolic fluid in the pump and everything works better."

Great product, March 31, 2008
By Hurley from New York

"Wow, this machine is amazing. We cannot get over how it takes a big log and just cracks it thru the middle so easily. The biggest effort is to lift the log onto the machine. One word of caution. We initially used a regular outdoor extension cord and it kept blowing our circuit breaker. When we switched to a 12 gauge extension cord everything worked perfectly.
We also lift the splitter onto a small wooden bench so that we don't have to bend over. This machine is well worth the money."

Workhorse, February 11, 2008
By BigDaddyJack from Dallas, TX

"The unit worked great. I wish the information specified a 20 amp receptacle requirement. Unit draws 17.5 amps without a load and surged to about 50 amps on start. Not sure if a standard 15 amp receptacle would work. Luckily I have a 20amp duplex receptacle available. A 25' extension cord needs to be at least 12 ga., or 50' at 10 ga. Tried a 14/3 extension cord and the splitter would not start!
I've split alot of wood already. When I hit a knot that caused a bind, I moved the log 90 degrees and had no problems. Have split over 12" diameter logs without any problems. Would give unit 5 stars for performance, but took a star off for the lack of electrical information in the advertisement. Shipped ready to go. Even had oil in unit.
One last thing, it holds about 1 quart of hydraulic oil, but its hard to find that small a quantity of the specified lubricant. Not your standard hydraulic oil! You usually have to buy 5 gallons at a time. Did not find any at the large auto parts store."

Northern Industrial Electric Horizontal Log Splitt, February 3, 2008
By axregman from Woodbury, CT

"I had reservations about buying an electric wood splitter, but after using it the very first day it was delevered I became a believer. I was very pleased on how easy and how well it worked. The splitter came fully assembled and after reading through the instructions the only thing I had to do was open the bleeder screw.
The only concern that I had was height of the unit from ground level, it's rather low to the ground. I built a cradel out of slotted angle steel and raise the splitter up 24 inches. It's secure and works great with less bending and no back aches."

Little engine that could!, January 15, 2008
By noaxe10 from Hickory, North Carolina

"I've had some issues with my splitter. The first one kept popping the breaker; had to take it back and get another splitter. The second one pops the breaker too, but not as frequent. I've split about a cord of wood and I'm amazed at the power of this little motor. Even big logs pop open with ease. Sometimes you have to manipulate the cut by starting on the outer edge instead of nailing the wood dead center (big logs), but it cuts them every time. As for the circuit breaker, I was told this machine pulls about 19.2 amps, so I'm thinking my 20 amp breaker is warn and needs replacing. I wanted a 20 ton gas splitter but I don't have a riding law mower to pull it with. The electric one stores easily in the garage and is small enough to stay out of the way. Plus it's easy to pull around on it's wheels. Definitely worth the money! NORTHERN TOOL ON HWY 70 HAS #1CUSTOMER SERVICE!!!"

electric log splitter - 5 ton, January 14, 2008
By walter08 from Northern Michigan

"The box was slightly damaged upon arrival and one of the sides of the table was slightly bent. The handle is broken in the center and the rubber feet fall off. No problem there. Plugging the unit in it did not work. No instructions as to how to use the unit. Worked through that problem. The switch would stay on at first but now you have to hold the switch and use both handles at once. How many hands do I have. OK it can be done but is just a litle uncomfortable. The unit worked fine for the logs it were designed for. Than the weather got cold (35 degrees and colder) and the unit did not want to work. Brought it in side and warmed it up and it worked.
Over all it worked as designed. Little things would make it much better. Wider wheels for a more stable while moving. Feet that do not fall off. Metal handle that does not break."

The second one worked like a charm, January 14, 2008
By WeekendLogger from East Bay, CA

"The first log splitter arrived in a tattered box, with styrofoam pieces falling out of the corners. The UPS driver waited while I peeked in and once I saw bent metal, I had him take it back.
I notified Northern Tool and asked that they pack it better. The second one arrived in much better condition, although the box was still damaged. I guess the combination of US ground and the heavy weight of this package, make it hard to ship without damaging it.
Now, let's talk about this unit. It is sort of a no-frills tool. It does have wheels to enable you to roll it to the logs, or around your garage, and it has two control levers to keep your hands away from the dangerous parts. But it's not something that looks like it was designed to look pretty. It's all work. And I put log after log in, and it split them with ease. I only tried smaller logs, mostly a foot wide by a foot and a half long. No problems.
So far, I really like this thing is great."

Log Spliter Review, January 14, 2008
By garnerr1 from Vacaville California

"Packaging was very inadequate ,but it was lucky no damage was found. After plugging splitter into a standard 15 amp outlet the circuit breaker kept popping so I had to install a 20 amp circuit breaker with a 20 amp outlet, this stopped that problem. After about a half hour of splitting I noticed hydraulic fluid leaking out reservoir body. I disassembled the machine and found the screws holding the body together were loose which caused the mounting screws to strip out and O-rings to blow. I purchased a metric thread repair kit for $75.00 and found some o-rings to match at my local auto parts store, repaird the threads and installed the new o-rings refilled the reservoir. Now I think I have worked all the bugs it now does the job I purchase it for and that is to split 1/4 rounds into fire starter. If your not mechanically inclined stay away from this machine."

"I bought one and my friend at the same time. My switch burned up after 20 minutes of operation and my friend did not recieve an operations manual. He said he keeps blowing the breaker. I told him to open the bleeder screw before turning it on and he will check it out on his next trip to Wisconson. Northern customer service did not have a replacement switch in stock so I asked for a replacement which they sent as soon as they recieved the defective one."

Works well, but....., November 4, 2007
By Wonton from New York

"Bought one of these units this past spring, used it one time to split about half a cord, and put it in the barn for the summer. As per instructions, I opened the wing nut style valve while using the splitter, and closed it when not in use. As advertised, the splitter worked very well. Problem is, it leaked hydraulic fluid on the floor while being stored, and continued to leak while being transported in the back of my truck, and also while being used for only the second time, to split two-thirds of a cord of wood."
