Problem with bolt, August 27, 2008
By LeighCVA from Pennsylvania

"I really am happy with this log splitter. My friend bought this same one but 37 ton, and I got the 22 ton. The bolts that hold the wedge on broke on BOTH our splitters and we had to replace them with a better, stronger quality bolt. Other than that, so far so good."

A back saver, August 18, 2008
By 68chevyII from Hartland, Mi.

"I love it. This machine works and works without problem. It allows me to split a lot of wood that I otherwise wouldn't have even bothered with before due to knots or crotches ect. I have a very bad back and I can still use this machine for several hours at a time. Splitting by hand I could only do about 30-45 minutes at a time. Very happy with it. Thanks"

NorthStar 22-Ton Log Splitter, August 18, 2008
By JohnB75 from Jackson, NH

"This is a ruggedly built machine. Its operation compares quite favorably with 9 HP splitters that I have rented over the years (the 5 HP Honda engine is adequate – and one of the easiest-starting engines that I have owned). I am pleased with the log cradle – it appears to be able to withstand the normal abuse these devices take – and they are indispensable for a one-man operation.
Assembly was straight forward – it took about four hours of leisurely effort. I wish the instructions specified bolt head sizes – were these metric of SAE? Using the hook on my loader bucket, I was easily able to erect the machine single-handedly.
The gripping power of the base plate needs improvement – the base of the log slips on the face of the base plate too easily. (Backing off the wedge and repositioning the log is time consuming.) The heavy weld bead joining the base plate and beam acts like a fillet which promotes the slipping of the log. I would suggest the manufacturer put a 5/8” dia. hole in the base for an accessory attachment – a pin array or serrated plate. Perhaps I’ll get out my heavy-duty drill and make a modification.
But so far, so good. I heat with wood in northern New England so this splitter will get a workout. After finally building a barn I am able to increase my collection of toys. This splitter was my first choice."

22 Ton Log splitter, August 11, 2008
By SPhil from Franklin, MA

"This is a good quality product for the small user. The engine is a little small for everyday or large log use. Large logs have a tendency to stall the engine. A larger engine would suite the product better. In addition, the 4 way attachment will work on smaller logs and binds up on larger logs."

my splitter, July 11, 2008
By johnnyct from Fairfield County, CT

"The ordering process was a dream ,the salesperson helped every step of the way, The delivery was ok the shrink wrap was a bit of a mess and a catch pin was missing, upon opening the packaging I had noticed some deep scratches on the top of the cylinder that were down to the metal. I wasnt very happy about that but I'll get some paint and touch it up so it does not rust. When they say you need two people to assemble the cylinder they mean it. Assembly went fairly quick and easy, but the two people are a must. Filled with fluids and it started right up. My helper was so eager to try the unit out he sprinted through the yard and came back with two logs which the splitter did without any hesitation. Norstar was very helpful with sending out the missing catch pin. And my wife just ordered a 30 yard dumpster full of logs that I'm sure will be done in no time at all with the new 22 ton splitter that is replacing my old Didier log splitter."

One Fine Machine, April 21, 2008
By Buds from Bayfield County, WI

"We purchased this 22 ton horiz/vert splitter some years ago. It arrived promptly, and the assembly was no real problem (except the mistake made by the assembler-me) which was quickly rectified by the helpful response from Northern Tool. Since then we've split tons of maple and birch firewood, and kindling splits great, also. A number of friends, neighbors, and relatives have borrowed the splitter (most had broken or otherwise bad machines), and all invariably said it was the best they ever used. It's never had a breakdown, and I don't dread the winter wood splitting chore. Thanx for a winner!"

"Have used my splitter for a couple of months now and find it to be very strong and dependable. It is one of the best I have ever used. The price is right and it is actually stronger than I expected it to be. Called customer service about a small issue and they fixed the problem fast. Nice and friendly service! Would highly reccommend this product to anyone."

22 Ton Log Splitter, January 17, 2008
By 6212Berquist from Winston-Salem, NC

"Okay. I'll be the first reviewer for 2008. I have split logs myself for several years and was pretty good at it. At the urging of others, I decided to purchase a log splitter. I bought the Northstar 22 Ton and decided to assemble it. When I first saw it in the Northern Tool storage yard, it was all wrapped up in plastic and recently rained on. This is going to be fun, I thought. After I got it home, it was hardly wet at all inside and everything was there. I was able to assemble most of it until the directions called for lifting the (heavy) hydraulic cylinder into the vertical position to attach it to the I beam on the trailer. Using my tractor, I was able to lift it up-right using the front loader with a chain and nylon tow strap. After that, things went pretty smoothly. I wasn't sure how the 5 hp engine was going to handle larger logs, but it was no sweat. The only concern/problem I had was after the second day of operation, hydraulic oil started squirting out of the vent hole in the filler cap. I called Northern Tool and spoke with a helpful technican who recommended cycling the cyclinder several times before actual use. The machine is well engineered and the workmanship is very good. Well, that's my story. Why didn't I get one these things sooner?"

Gitter of a splitter, November 4, 2007
By knoat from North Carolina

"I did a lot of comparing and shopping around, and for the price of this log splitter, you can't beat it. This is the perfect homeowner/woodsmans peice of equipment, the weight is a little high, but to me, that says quality, it is nicely balanced and easy to manuver around by hand, and I dont recomend it, but, one man can assemble it, it goes together nicely. You can't beat the Honda motor, don't let the small 5HP fool ya', it has PLENTY of power, the average person doesn't need a 9 or 11 HP splitter. Look closely at the other brands, especially at the details, they don't have the quality of these machines ! You can spend less for a log splitter and get a cheap quality log splitter or you can spend more and not get what you would with this one."

log splitter, October 29, 2007
By tomthetoolman from knoxville TN

"strong versatile splitter-
works very well on hickory and oak- up to 26" long+ and 30" dia
Do not put the additional wings for 4 way splitting on larger wood as it is not enough to push through the quarters- required removal and re placement-
this is a great all aroundsplitter for the price"

"This is an excellent deal, especially when on sale price. I have just recieved this and was up in the air until I used it. I combined it with the 4-way wedge that is available for attachment and it splits soooo fast now. The w4 way wedge is a must buy accessory. I have split 25" long logs that are up to 22" thick with the single wedge and have yet to bog it down. Even with the four way attachment, it will rarely bog down unless splitting very large logs with tough knots or crotches. It really works well and I have split about a cord and a half in 2 hours by myself.
It is very heavy , built tough , and sits high for minimal back strain. However, its weight also serves as a downfall because the buyer must assemble most of it when it arrives. It's weight can make it cumbersome. The Honda engine is wonderful but it would be nice if the gas tank was a little bigger. I found it to run about 2 hours on one tank. I'm sure that is fine for a homeowner but I own a landscaping company and need to split large quatities for extended periods. The log cradle is also a nice feature."
