Incoming Water,
April 23, 2008
By Deepwaterfrom Oran, Missouri
"The two sump pumps in my basement could not keep up with the incoming water after 13 inches of rainfall over a two days time period. The North Star transfer pump I had ordered from Nothern Tool for this type of emergency saved the day! The pump is light enough that I could carry it outside to the basement window and filled the tank with gasoline. My wife ran the inlet hose to the sump pump hole in the basement and connected it to the pump and started the transfer pump with one pull of the rope! The transfer pump ran for two hours and took away all the water in my basement. I am very pleased and impressed by this pump!"

Trash Pump,
April 23, 2008
By RWClearyfrom Newburyport, MA
"Starts easy. Works great. Moves a lot of water effortlessly. It is heavy fairly heavy, especially for those of us with back problems. (think about buying the wheel kit). Also, the welds on the cage failed rather quickly but that was an easy fix."

"This pump completely exceeded my expectations for removing pond water to make repairs. The Honda engine was a lot easier to operate and the noise was a lot less than I had hoped for . For the money I spent on this operation I am very pleased with the purchase."

Northstar semi-trash pump,
April 21, 2008
By Geo2533from Edina, MN
"Our Northstar pump worked great. We only had one problem with the starting rope which broke rendering the pump useless. The rope retracted into the housing making it very difficult to restring in a remote location. I did finally get it restrung but it was a few inches shorter causing the pump to be more difficult to start. I think the starting ropes should be of a higher quality non-fray material."

"I use this pump to fill a 3,000 gallon water tender used for wildland fire. This pump is very reliable and you can go wrong with the Honda motor. The water sources we use are usually lakes, ponds, rivers and creeks and the pump doesn't clog or bog down!"

NorthStar Semi-Trash Pump,
January 21, 2008
By Silverbulletfrom Dallas Texas
"Very reliable. Purchased to drain tanks and swimming pool. Could not believe the amount of suction pump created at a 8 foot drop with little or no primming. I could lose prime and stick hose to bottom of pool with slight opening to start pumping again. Pro: o Resonable cost o Reliable and easy to start o Easy to prime and tremendous pick up o Easy to clean out Con: o A little heavey to move, especially with back trouble"

"We use these pumps to pump out ditches on our pipeline. They are lightweight, efficient, and very reliable. The Honda engines are the best engines out there for the money. We will continue to purchase these pumps through Northern."

"we have used the water pump as an Aux Pump for the Local Fire Department for the past 4 month. Water flow and suction are as or better then stated. Starts on the first or second pull (after gas is in system)"

"I used the pump to drain a medium size pond. It worked great. I am impressed how easily the engine starts every time. Fuel economy could be improved, but I think is competitive. I had to refill it every two hours. After setting for a few days, the intake check valve seemed stuck as the pump ran for minutes without pressure until I disconnected the intake hose and pushed the check valve by hand. Overall, I am happy with the purchase."

"Excellent equipment, with very dependable Honda motor. Has good water discharge at various motor speeds. Only problem so far is low oil cutoff. Instruction manual isn't correct with oil level, as states that oil level should fall between certain ranges on dip stick. In real life situations, oil needs to be up to the top of reservoir. I like the weight of pump as is easy to move around. One person can easily set it up, even in wooded areas away from roads."

"The pump and Honda engine are a great match. The engine is extremely tough. ours has been submerged several times and we can get it running in about 20 min. If the pump needs parts, they are available quickly through Northstar. The service reps are very knowledgable and helpful. Ordering parts is very easy and quick."

Great little pump,
May 2, 2007
By ratio411from Pensacola, FL
"We have several of these pumps in our fleet. They are in our trucks and mounted to our trailers for general water transfer. We use clear tap or well water in our tanks, so we have no opinion on the "trash" capabilities of this pump... However, for day in and day out use, all day long, these things can't be beat with a stick! They don't run hot, the adjustable throttle gives what you need in flow... Be it a trickle or full on 'garden hose' volume/pressure. At a mid-throttle setting, fuel goes on and on. If you have to run at high throttle for a long time, it can get thirsty. I have used these to pump up a full 8 story condo building. That's maxed out though. At 8 stories it must be full blast throttle and flow up top is reduced. It also can get hot if it is 'dead head' for long term at that height.
All of our small engines are Honda... With good reason. They are hands down the best small engine."

Just in Time,
April 24, 2007
By LarryWfrom Andover, MA
"We live in Andover, Massachusetts and have over the past 30 years seen many storms and power outages, but never when we needed our electric sump pumps, that is, until this year with the April 14-16 rains, all 5 inches plus of it. I had been thinking of a gas "handy Billy" for several years - wondering when we were going to get caught. I finally ordered the 4HP, 11,000 gal/hour pump, from Northern Tool, in late winter. Sunday the 15th I was working on taxes and having to re-start my computer because of power surges. About 4:30am, Monday, I checked the basements - all was well. I gave myself an extra couple of hours sleep and woke at about 8am to find no power. I checked the basement - out of control! Our furnace and hot water heater were flooded. Time to get the pump! The pump was still in the box in the garage. I got it out, read the instructions, loaded the oil and gas and hooked up the hoses. Oh! Oh! the strainer was for a 3" pump. Never mind I transformed a plastic bucket into a kind of strainer. The hose went down the basement and fired up the Honda - started on the second pull. The water came pouring out - I had to lay the open hose on the old dirt floor and naturally picked up some ancient coke - yes coal coke. I then found the wrench to be the wrong size for opening the pump housing. But with a bit of wrench work, had the pump section opened, cleaned out, closed and back in business. While listening to the Red Sox on the emergency radio, I looked over and a light was on - power! At that point the electrics were able to hold the line. Over the last few years, with all the building around us, we are at the bottom of a hill, our yard floods heavily enough that we will have 3 to 4 feet of water running through the back yard, around the house and out into the street. I put the pump to work and pumped down the back yard! This pump is an excellent value, easy to operate, very portable, and a beautifully made and assembled piece of high quality machinery. I plan to pump the water off the pool cover and keep it as a super stand-by. Just today I ordered more hose and the two metal strainers. Regards - LKW"
